No. 71 Greens Place.

Greens Place, from No.66 up, taken from across the Tyne or possibly the North Sea Ferry in 2011.

No. 71 was the leftmost of the yellow ones in the centre and 12 years later it was put on the market by an estate agent in Cardiff. The Photograph was lifted from the sales pitch of James Douglas, Sales and Lettings, Cardiff, some 400km to the SW.

They were asked why it was on the market with them rather than a more local estate agent and they quite reasonably said:- “Unfortunately, we are not at liberty to disclose the information you have requested regarding the Seller’s decision to appoint us as an Estate Agent, though I can confirm that we do sometimes act as selling agents for properties outside of our geographical area and we are able to facilitate the viewing requests with no issues.

The seller and and his immedieate neighbours knew why it was not on the market with the Estate Agents in South Shields and that was simply because the upgrade to the former pair of flats was done without planning permission and the local estate agents knew this as well!

The houses either side had been pairs of flats as well, 72 used to have two front doors and the upper flat of 70 was served by the ally that used to run between it and 69. That ally was also used to serve the flat above 69 as well but that became 68 some time in 1960’s.

The pair of flats that became 71 were both entered from what was the old Tyne Pilots Office, the entrance of which was as grand as any apart from the ‘Big House’ in Greens Place.
