Beacon etc.

The demolition of the Beacon: This eventually went to Committee at the end of 2015 and the first thing the promoter who happened to be the Principal Planning Officer said was that there were only 5 protestors. The three who had decided to turn up to the meeting to make their views known, plus 2 observers of the process.

The Committee decided to visit the site but the protestors were not invited. Nor were their observations recorded and by this means they were censored.

Not many of the Beacon’s former clients were readers of the Pontefract and Castleford Gazette and why their was little record of it the Shields Gazette. Apparently there were only 5 protestors according to the Planning Officer who was presenting for the development at the committee meeting in Jarrow on February 1st 2016.

30-Nov-15 ST/0746/15/FUL. Not feasible as the light well serving the basement would wave to have taken half of the pavement in front of the former Beacon and the works would have required a stopping up of that end of Greens Place for some months and that is why the planning permission given has since lapsed. Check with the Council but it is a good bet that it would have been in early 2019.

Once thriving pub bought by a speculator!
The rebuilding of number 71 Greens Place is dealt with on a separate page.
