May

Date Action
May 2014 Jonathan Wilson, Director, UK Docks, sent an undated letter at the very beginning of May to some residents in Greens Place and Harbour View. View Letter and Plans.
Note particularly: “. . . our preference is that we remain in the South Shields area and that we develop our facility at the River Drive site in order to continue with our existing and future contracts. Our premises in Sunderland, like the Port of Tyne, is leased so River Drive South Shields is our only available option for investment.”
02.05.14 I write to the Head of Development Services because the North Shields Ferry has been taken onto the UK Docks slipway on River Drive and I know he wrote to a fellow sufferer in Harbour view on the 04.04.2014. “It is my intention to write formally to the operator instructing them that all operational works within the shelter should cease with immediate effect until such a time as the end panels are installed”. This is because the ferry does not fit in the shelter. Further analysis in Reversion.
02.05.14 Head of Development Services sends a response to the Petition: Development at UK Docks. There are a few pieces of misinformation in this letter and I will deal with only one here:- There is no documentation anywhere to support the statement: “The approved dimensions of the steelwork are:
• Proposed height 15.5m at the River Drive end.
I have shown in correspondence to his Planning Manager and elsewhere in this website that this statement cannot be justified: there are no authorised drawings, when examined with a critical eye, that can support it. It seems to me that he thinks if he repeats something often enough it becomes true.
9.05.14 I write to the Head of Development Services and protest about his misrepresentation of the plans for the slipway cover in his letter to the Residents in response to our Petition. This is not responded to directly but his staff again turn it into a different complaint, No. 253539.

The article in the Gazette, the letter from J Wilson and most importantly the response to our Petition contained a lot of misinformation. Also about this time it became known that UK Docks were offered a site to move to by the Port of Tyne. They presumably had to offer them an alternative site or there would have been a planning issue because the extension of the River Quay. It incidentally puts the Readhead’s Landing out of use as well. This is dealt with more fully in /Biomass.

02.06.14 Stage 2 reply from the Head of Development Services (HDS) which is very interesting because there has been no escalation to Stage 2 by me. Copy of letter sent by HDS. There is a new Case No. 253539 with note:
Letter to GM following previous letter dated 4th April. Not happy with response at Stage 1. Letter to be dealt with at Stage 2.
13.06.14 Shelter signed off. By whom and does this mean that the slipway is now legally available for use? Probably not. STC
20.06.14 Application to build another shed and some new offices from UK Docks agents, Gary Craig Building Services Ltd, ST/0461/14/FUL and we voice our complaints again. Just to show that the new shed will be much more than twice a big I have just downloaded Drawing No 9 of 35 documents.
